Dave Hughes Bio
You know a DJ has a sort of death grip on his audience when previously
sleeping people leap up out of a sound sleep and immediately throw
themselves onto the dance floor. The DJ we’re referring to is DJ Dave
Hughes, of Ireland (currently LA), and the incident described actually
happened during one of his gripping sets at The Philadelphia
Experiment camp at Burning Man, 2007. Trying to describe his style is
like trying to capture Shakespeare in flat prose. Techy house at
times, at others funky, flavorful, driving beats, at once smooth and
grinding bass lines that, most simply put, just make people want to
dance.
With acid house, 80s pop music, metal and 90s rap spurring him on as
early influences, Dave Hughes first hit the decks in 1993 at age 15.
By 16, Dave played his first Dublin gig at the legendary Kitchen,
owned by U2. Dave would eventually end up working as an assistant
audio engineer on U2’s album “All That You Can’t Leave Behind” in
Dublin, 2000.
After these auspicious beginnings, Dave went on to host residences and
guest DJ spots all over Ireland, the United States, Australia, and
Mexico. Some memorable highlights of Dave’s career include his
residency at Home Nightclub, Ireland (1999), Love Parade, Berlin
(2002), and The Peppermint lounge, Sydney, Australia (2005).
Dave’s first record signing was by Rithma label on Rithmica Records in
2007. With his remix of “Step Aside” (Monica Brooke, vocals) he broke
into the DJ/Producer scene. In April 2007, Dave signed with
Philadelphia based label, Playloop Records, and released his first
commercial EP, “Journey’s End EP.” Soon after, on October 1, 2007
Dave’s “Let’s Do It EP” was released by legendary DJ / Producer John
Tejada on his Palette Recordings, the same day that Playloop Records
released his “Messages EP.” All in time for his 29th birthday.
There is certainly more to come from this avid DJ/Producer. In early
2008 Dave’s two remixes for the track “Do You Believe In Angels?” by The Model,
a new band on the Playloop label, to be released in September 2009. Dave Hughes
will also be featured on Justin Paul’s upcoming album, Playloop Presents Get Into the
Loop Volume 2, slated for release in March 2010.
Dave Hughes currently resides in Los Angeles, California, where he
works on audio restoration and foreign language translation and film
dubbing for major motion pictures.
