Question: How would you describe your workflow together?

Matt Cue: In the studio we have a very symbiotic relationship. Where I may be focused on one thing, Everyday is thinking of something else that helps fill in the gaps and vi s-a-versa.

DJ Everyday: I totally agree! You know sometimes Matt will get totally engrossed in creating this fantastic sounding patch using an out board synth or plug-in, and I’ll be able to hear how that sound needs to be EQ’d to sit better in the mix.

Matt Cue: Yeah, I’d say this happens all the time with us and we don’t even realize we’re doing it. In a lot of cases I will be focusing on an individual part and, per say, attempting to get a percussion midi pattern exactly right, and once it’s there he’s already on top of how that part should come in. He’ll have a more overall perspective on how it will flow with the rest the tracks sequence.

DJ Everyday: I’m excited to see where this partnership goes. We definitely bounce really positive energy off of one another when we’re in the middle of a long session. So far its just clicked, ya know?

Matt Cue: Right, we have a very hands on approach and once we get going and are having fun with it, there’s a really good vibe in the room and I feel that translates through into the recordings.

Question: Why did you name the track Nepenthe?

DJ Everyday: It’s funny in the beginning we just had the project file named with the date we started it, 11-30-2011. We obviously didn’t want that to be the actual name of the track, so we put it on the back burner while we were finishing up the track.

Matt Cue: I came across an old recording I did of a friend speaking in French. The lyrics of the song loosely translate to, “You  turn my grey skies blue.” We decided the best way to sum this up into one word is “Nepenthe”. The word nepenthe was used in Greek literature and was basically a potion used to cure sadness.

Question: In terms of production, What’s next for DJ Everyday and Matt Cue?

DJ Everyday: We have a few other tracks that are coming along nicely.  Looking forward to finishing these tracks up and getting them out in an EP.

Matt Cue: We’ve now hit a groove together and are building upon that momentum. We just recently combined a lot of our studio gear to facilitate a more “jam style” approach to producing, kind of like a live pa. Now we have multiple computers and multi track recording on all machines to capture the vibe we want others to feel.

DJ Everyday: We are both open to the idea of creating a live pa for our future shows.  So, we are keeping that in mind on our production process.  Live pa’s are a lot fun, so its easy to see why we are moving in that direction.

The Model “Do You Believe In Angels?” Reviewed by Amorn Bholsangngam 4.5 out of 5 Stars

The slick, stylish pop of Philadelphia electronic trio The Model is just as aesthetically pleasing as any of the long-legged, platinum-haired human mannequins that wander freely outside our Beverly Hills office though not nearly vacant as you’d presume those vixens would be. J Buz, Johnny, and Markie craft life-sized hooks over gently strobing instrumentals that will stick in your head longer than the hottest image in your favorite maternity wear catalog. Their debut record “Physical” on Playloop possesses a very fitting title; this is music that is hard not to react physically to, inciting impromptu dance parties, orgies, and head-bobbing sessions across the land. “Do You Believe in Angels” is just a slice of this promising band’s infectious blend of anthemic melodies, dancefloor-ready beats, lovesick vocals, and shimmering synthwork.

Late to the party, but what an entrance
As the opening synths of “What Does It Look Like I’m Doing” drop into arpeggiated spirals and emotionally wrenched vocals, it’s clear this Philly outfit knows its way around the resurgent synth-pop blueprint. Filled with layers of over-the-top catchy synth hooks to match the overwrought vocals occasionally indulging in falsettos, The Model’s debut disc sounds like a lost ’80s treasure. But it’s not a one-note revival; “Immigrant” takes on the slinky grind of early Nine Inch Nails, and “Cowboys” looks to early techno.

POP JUSTICE
The Model are from Philadelphia and they make electronic pop music. As it happens, they’re very good at it. Here at Popjustice we’re no fans of hyperbole but the press release in front of us today says “it’s not an overstatement or overconfidence to say this band’s debut CD Physical could be the electronic rock record of the year”. They might have got slightly ahead of themselves, but listening through the album we think it’s definitely in the Top 8.

“What Does It Look Like I’m Doing?” and “Wrong Number” features all the glitz and glitter great synthpop is all about. A sparkling synth line matches up with a pulsating beat and flowing lyrics that’s just magic for the ears. “I Won’t Be Hanging Out Anymore” brings some Philly philth into the mix for a dirtier electro sound. “Do You Believe In Angels” is reminiscent of Fischerspooner sans the robots and cheeky shtick, while “N/A” needs no explanation – it’s all about the power of Markie as a frontman. “Immigrant” sounds like it could have easily come from Trent Reznor’s Pretty Hate Machine or Broken. These are only half the tracks on Physcial – ’nuff said.

The Model was started by frontman/lyricist Markie and keyboardists Ziggy, Jason and Johnny as a semi-annual philosophic-pop-costume-party in Philadelphia, and today, it’s pretty much retained some of the pop and dance-ness and ridiculous-ness. The Model inspired by geometry and Russian literature, by Katherine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart, in old black and white photos. It’s as much man as it is machine.
